Should you build muscle with whole foods or liquid meals?
One question I often hear asked about a weight gain diet is whether or not you should depend on protein supplements. I’m talking about protein powders, which are sometimes called liquid meals by bodybuilders.
You definitely do not want to rely on the supplements completely. I knew a guy once who was drinking readymade protein shakes all day long and ended up getting sick. It may have been a coincidence, but you don’t want to end up throwing up all day like he did!
You must remember that protein powders and similar products were developed because of their convenience and should be used as supplements and not as the core of a diet. You need to consume sufficient vitamins, minerals, fiber etc. if you wish to build muscle as quickly and efficiently as possible.
If you expect to achieve top results in your muscle building program, you must keep your body in the best shape possible. This requires a variety of quality foods in your diet, and drinking shakes by themselves is simply not a substitute for proper nutrition. Not to mention, many shakes are full of sugar and are just simply not healthy for your muscle or overall body.
Another reason why you don’t want to depend completely on these liquid meals is because you’re going to get tired of eating the same thing over and over again. The taste is usually a bigger motivation than health for most people, and these protein shakes are going to get boring after a while!
Most of your diet should be coming from quality whole foods, not just from protein shakes.
Always remember these weightlifting supplements are meant to help you achieve your goals but are not absolutely necessary. If you’re short on cash, do yourself a favor and focus on your training regimen and keeping a good diet. You simply don’t have to go out and spend a bunch of money on the latest supplements.
Even protein powders, which are relatively helpful supplements, are not absolutely necessary. While they’re helpful when it’s difficult to consume adequate calories or protein, a bunch of powder with artificial ingredients thrown in is not a substitute for a solid, healthy meal plan.
